泰特勒翻译三原则；1790年， Essays on the Principles of Translations （《论翻译的原则》）出版， 作者是泰特勒。泰特勒同样提出了翻译的三原则：
①The translation should give a complete transcript of the idea of the original work.
②The style and manner of writing should be of the same character with that of the original.
③The translation should have all the ease of the original composition.

1789年，乔治· 坎贝尔英译《圣经.四福音》并发表了论述翻译原则和方法的长篇导言，提出了翻译的三原则：
1. To give a just representation of the sense of the original.
2. To convey into his version, as much as possible, in a consistency with the genius of the language which he writes,the author’s spirit and manner.
3. To take care that the version have, “at least so far the quality of an original performance, as to appear natural and easy.”

坎贝尔指控泰特勒剽窃， 但是泰特勒说他的三原则与坎贝尔相同，纯粹是一种巧合。 论影响， 泰特勒的著作远比坎贝尔的大，因为泰特勒涉及的题材范围较广， 而且把重点放在世俗作品的翻译上， 不象坎贝尔那样专谈圣经翻译。
也许，坎贝尔失败之处就在于：翻译题材受限制，影响力不够大，所以当我们一般提到翻译三原则，就自然而言会想到泰特勒。当然，这也给后世的学者提供了研究的方向和题材，比如研究对比此二人三原则的异同，在诗歌翻译中三原则的应用等等。历史总是有争议的。
